CPL set to trial Arsene Wengers innovative offside rule change in 2026

The updated rule clarification, put forward by ex Arsenal coach and FIFAs Head of Global Football Development Arsene Wenger, intends to encourage more offensive moves and enhance the rhythm of top level fixtures, the release noted.

With this fresh method, a forward would only face an offside call if there exists an obvious separation, known as daylight, from the opposing defender, so the player remains onside should any part of their body used for scoring align with or trail the second last defender.

This marks a vital experiment, Wenger commented.

Conducting the assessment of this revised rule in a pro league lets us grasp its effects more fully, particularly how it boosts decision making, game tempo, and forward momentum.

The Canadian Premier League explained that the test phase will happen via tight teamwork with FIFA, responsible for directing the analysis and review setup, plus coordination with Canada Soccer for equipping referees, athletes, and organisations.

We aim to establish the CPL as a pioneer in advancements while offering substantial input to footballs international growth, noted James Johnson, head of the Canadian Premier League and chief executive of Canadian Soccer Media and Entertainment.

Besides the offside initiative, the CPL plans to roll out FIFA crafted and IFAB sanctioned protocols, featuring Football Video Support, designed to minimise delays and optimise fixture performance.
