Grasshoppers owners ponder sale amid fan discontent over leadership issues

The club released a statement from the consortium associated with the US owners of Los Angeles FC, indicating their willingness to explore a potential sale, as long as it guarantees the clubs long-term financial and competitive viability.

The fans protests in recent times urged us to depart from the club, the ownership consortium explained, while noting they are prepared to negotiate a partial or complete divestment of their shares.

Tensions have escalated lately, featuring protests at games, and were exacerbated by a recent loss in the Swiss Cup semi-final to Lausanne-Ouchy, who play in the second division.

Additionally, the owners pointed out that the clubs day-to-day expenses surpass its income, stressing that external funding is essential for Grasshoppers to sustain its position in top-tier football.

In the initial phase of the Swiss league, Grasshoppers ended up in 11th position from 12, and they are currently in the drop zone battle with the lower six clubs.

As Switzerlands most decorated side, they boast 27 domestic titles, though their last league triumph came in 2003 and the Swiss Cup in 2013. They have also featured multiple times in the European Cup and UEFA Cup competitions.

Over the past few decades, the team has faced ups and downs in performance and finances, with frequent managerial shifts and overseas investments aimed at reviving their fortunes. Notably, Grasshoppers dropped to Switzerlands second level in 2019 before climbing back to the elite division two seasons later.

The Los Angeles FC affiliated group secured controlling interest in 2024, integrating Grasshoppers into a growing trend of cross-continental ownership structures in European soccer.
