New Jersey slashes World Cup rail fares further to 98 dollars

New Jersey Transit has now brought the rail ticket cost for World Cup journeys down to 98 dollars, building on an earlier cut to 105 dollars at the start of May.

These travel rates had deeply angered World Cup enthusiasts in the New York City region as well as those coming from abroad, prompting extensive political feedback ranging from regional authorities to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

Officials nearby voiced concerns that FIFA stood to make billions from the tournament, yet New Jersey residents would shoulder a massive expense for policing, service interruptions, and additional match related effects.

"We succeeded in trimming the expenses without shifting the economic load onto NJ Transits everyday riders and regular travellers," explained Priya Jain, Chair of NJ Transit.

The organisation noted that boosted earnings from sponsorships made this fare adjustment feasible.

The competition, shared among the United States, Canada, and Mexico, kicks off on June 11th.
