INSIGHT: Benfica youth coach Vitor Vinha discusses Youth League semi-final and collaboration with Mourinho

Amid the drive to secure another Youth League title and the need to "instil the Benfica philosophy", Vitor Vinha stresses an approach centred on holistic player growth, a competitive ethos, and equipping young talents to thrive at the top level.

The emerging coach also points to the strengthening ties between the academy and the senior squad, referencing the latest breakthroughs by several prospects and Jose Mourinho's motivational oversight of the process.

Through specific instances and a clear blueprint for the initiative, a shared objective stands out: persisting in nurturing stars and bolstering the club's longevity among the elite.

'A key tournament for our development'

Benfica holds a strong legacy in this event, which holds great significance for academies across Europe. How does this involvement reflect the efforts in Benfica's youth setup?

Vitor Vinha: "Our participation in every edition of the Youth League, along with four final appearances, including one triumph now etched in our honours, mirrors the outstanding efforts Benfica has invested in its youth squads to produce elite talents.

"From the moment a Benfica youngster joins the Seixal Campus or begins their journey with us, the Youth League becomes a target and aspiration. These finals and participations highlight the collective dedication of the entire system to player progression.

"This tournament is crucial for us and for our players' advancement. We feel privileged to compete and hold a rich legacy in it. A legacy we cherish and aim to expand. That is our commitment."

This event introduces players to varied challenges unlike those in domestic play, especially facing top talents of their age group. What value do these European fixtures bring to their growth?

"The Youth League stands out as it essentially parallels the Champions League. In top European football, the Champions League reigns supreme, defining the pinnacle. As a reflection of that, the Youth League assembles Europe's premier youth prospects.

"Here we find the finest individuals, squads, and academy programmes. It offers a preview of tomorrow's stars, as numerous participants ascend to senior elite levels. Indeed, some from this season's Youth League have already featured in a Champions League match for their seniors.

"In essence, it is the budding Champions League. Tracking the evolution of players and teams is thrilling and often eye-opening.

"We understand our own setting intimately, as it is our everyday realm, yet confronting diverse rivals and witnessing their talents emerge in major clubs provides valuable insights and assessments. For nurturing players, this competition is invaluable. It foreshadows the elite's future."

Prior to focusing on your upcoming semi-final foes, Club Brugge, could you offer a brief review of the squad's campaign? Impressive results, numerous victories, and a tough quarter-final versus Inter Milan...

"At a glance, the overall record is highly encouraging. We excelled in the group phase, suffering just one loss in London under unique circumstances, where the scoreline did not truly capture the teams' quality. It underscored clinical finishing. We created opportunities for more goals but failed to convert them.

"Chelsea capitalised on their openings effectively. Nonetheless, that match prompted us to consolidate, reassess our direction, and for our youths to recognise areas for enhancement and the collective path forward.

"Remember, the group stage coincided with the Under-17 World Cup, where we claimed the title with nine of our players involved. Others remained to handle Youth League duties and stepped up admirably, many as key starters.

"We arrive at this Final Four as a robust, skilled group brimming with talent and boasting the highest scoring output in a single edition, which is remarkable. We enter this pivotal Final Four phase with immense determination and energy, aiming to defeat Brugge and secure another final berth, our primary aim."

What challenges do you anticipate in this encounter, and where might Benfica gain an edge?

"Brugge form a sturdy unit, with a record akin to ours despite variations: eight victories and a single loss. They possess the tightest defence, allowing only five goals, evidencing their resilience and featuring standout players and a potent attack capable of advancing both solo and as a group.

"However, beyond Brugge, our focus remains on ourselves, our output, our personnel, and the individual prowess at our disposal. As noted, we embody team spirit fully, bonded and familial, which has been pivotal to our progress.

"Sustaining this cohesion, intensity, and capability positions us strongly to surpass this adversary, aligning with our aspirations."

Is emulating the 2022 success, when Benfica claimed the title, your target?

"Prior to eyeing that milestone, our immediate objective is the final. We concentrate on Brugge, on thorough preparation, analysing their assets and vulnerabilities. We aim to mask our shortcomings and deploy our style, our identity, what defines Benfica.

"Certainly, victory and a final spot drive us. In the final, further plans follow. Currently, Brugge commands our attention, as progressing past them unlocks the rest. Without that, nothing else matters."

Does a Benfica academy product today clearly see a pathway to the senior team upon excelling?

"Absolutely. Upon entering Benfica, a youth is aware of proven paths: Joao Neves, Cancelo, Antonio Silva, Tomas Araujo, Samu, and others. Plus, this season's debutants inspire the whole academy.

"They motivate the entire youth framework. Excellence in effort and growth across physical, technical, tactical, mental, and social facets brings them nearer to senior integration.

"Yet, it is a journey. Success varies, and not all reach the first team, but they grasp that preparation equips them for a professional path elsewhere if needed. From the outset, they accept this reality. We guide and bolster them throughout."

With Benfica's substantial academy investment, do you envision the senior setup relying more on homegrown talents ahead?

"Yes, without doubt. That is our pursuit. It forms the core of the club's youth strategy: cultivating and elevating prospects for senior and elite integration. Daily efforts align with this.

"The organisation and resources are geared to meet this, fostering our youths' rise. We have succeeded notably, with numerous successes, and aspire to integrate even more into the first team."

'Mourinho motivated my coaching path'

Roughly two years back, in a Flashscore chat, you mentioned readiness for challenges. How do you rate these two years at Benfica, and what has the journey entailed?

"It has been an exceptional voyage. I liken it to rekindling a cherished bond that blossomed into a joyful union. I have matured significantly, advanced greatly, and aided Benfica's and our players' progress.

"Belonging to this institution, donning its revered emblem, and daily contributing fills me with profound pride. I am deeply content and eternally thankful to Benfica for this chance to join such a prestigious entity."

How has your Benfica tenure shaped your coaching identity?

"Undeniably. Operating within elite circles, and Benfica epitomises that, yields immense learning. I brought prior experience as a pro player and assistant under fine mentors, absorbing from each.

"Yet at Benfica, development persisted and accelerated. Engaging this environment, interfacing with these talents and departments, and advancing holistically is enriching.

"Daily, I contribute while absorbing, refining, and advancing my craft."

Is it unique coaching at a place where Jose Mourinho serves as a benchmark?

"Indeed. Personally, and likely for many peers, Mourinho ignited my coaching passion. He sparked it in me, as in countless Portuguese coaches.

"Interacting with a monumental figure, arguably history's finest and Portugal's greatest with his trophies and feats, is remarkable. Exchanging ideas, observing closely, and drawing lessons proves invaluable.

"He remains an icon, underscoring Benfica's and Mourinho's stature. Their synergy creates something truly remarkable."

Does Mourinho's keen interest in youth activities heighten your sense of duty?

"Certainly. He attends frequently and scrutinises the youth closely. He grasps the club's nuances swiftly and engages deeply on our prospects, debuting several already.

"This proximity to a legendary figure is inspiring, especially for me. His insights and feedback hold great worth. We advance in tandem, a profound asset. We press on together."

Finally, what words for Benfica supporters?

"Firstly, gratitude for the unwavering backing our squads have received. On behalf of myself and Benfica, we thank the fans. Their support fuels us too.

"Football thrives on passion, and they embody it. They fuel our daily rigour. Benfica followers demand much, which for me spurs growth and evolution. Their fervour invigorates.

"I urge presence in Lausanne. Many plan to attend, yet all should join to colour the venue in red, cheer our ascent, and witness these emerging stars closely.

"Let them propel us to triumph, easing our path. For absentees, tune in via broadcasts and channels. Stay engaged, sustain the push, as it drives our ambition further."
