FIFA cancels free World Cup tickets allocated in error after website glitch
Affected fans received notification on Wednesday that tickets had been 'allocated at no cost (0 USD) because of a prior payment problem during checkout', FIFA stated on X.
"The tickets these fans requested are still being held, and they have been asked to pay the correct amount. FIFA apologises for the mistake and any trouble caused."
This was the most recent hiccup in a ticketing process that has been controversial for the tournament co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.
Last week, the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey stated they had sent a subpoena to FIFA regarding its ticketing practices, amid concerns over where fans would be seated at the World Cup.
The tournament, featuring 48 teams, runs from 11 June to 19 July.
