Manchester City Mount Late Comeback to Beat Southampton and Advance to FA Cup Final
Southampton made their return to Wembley since the 2023/24 Championship playoff final, after securing victories over Premier League teams Fulham and the league leaders Arsenal.
Facing them were the current Premier League frontrunners, who were in their eighth consecutive semi-final appearance, having made eight alterations to their lineup from the previous match.
This did not hinder Manchester Citys initial flow, as they attempted to break through twice, only to be stopped by close offside decisions involving Omar Marmoush.
The linesmans flag played a key role once more in the opening 15 minutes, this time disallowing a goal from Leo Scienza who believed he had opened the scoring for Southampton.
Southampton competed well in a tightly contested first half, yet Manchester City controlled the ball and created more chances, with Marmoush nearly scoring from a close-range effort that Daniel Peretz tipped away expertly.
This was the sole shot on target for both teams before the break, leaving the second-tier outfit without any attempts of their own in the first period.
Preserving their clean sheet in the first half of FA Cup games this season, Southampton would have been satisfied with the deadlock at halftime, which nearly led to a chance for them had Nathan Ake not made a timely tackle to stop Tom Fellows.
But this did not indicate the direction of the game, as Pep Guardiola introduced two substitutes before the hour, increasing the intensity against Southampton.
The visitors stayed solid at the back, leading to more changes including Erling Haaland and Nico O'Reilly, and shortly afterwards, they were under siege when Peretz saved from Gonzalez before Tijjani Reijnders missed a volley.
Astonishingly, following persistent pressure from Manchester City, it was Southampton supporters celebrating 11 minutes before the end as Finn Azaz turned and curled a brilliant shot past James Trafford on his second touch.
For those fans, the joy was short-lived, lasting only four minutes, courtesy of Jeremy Doku whose shot deflected off James Bree and looped over Peretz.
Merely four minutes later, Gonzalez exploited some room to fire a long-range strike that flipped the match in Manchester Citys favour with minimal time left.
Southampton pushed hard in response, managing to block a breakaway with a clearance off the line from Savinho, but they could not find an equaliser, allowing Manchester City to progress to the final.
Having won the trophy once as a second-division team in 1975/76, Southampton now turn their attention to the promotion battle in the Championship.
For Guardiola's team, hopes of securing another domestic treble persist, with a showdown against either Chelsea or Leeds United in the final on the horizon.
