DR Congo Earns Historic World Cup Qualification After Tense Extra-Time Win Over Jamaica

The pressure was immense during this decisive qualifier in Zapopan, Mexico, where both teams sought to reach the World Cup for only the second time ever in their histories.

Even though Jamaica entered the match with a strong record of just one loss in nine outings (W6, D2), they were seen as underdogs by bookmakers beforehand, and the Reggae Boyz believed they had conceded early when a smooth sequence of passes ended with Meschack Elia sending a low ball across the goalmouth for Cedric Bakambu to steer home. However, the joy for DR Congo proved fleeting, as the assistant referee quickly flagged for offside, preventing the African team from taking an initial advantage.

DR Congo controlled the opening exchanges, with Bakambu nearly scoring as the 15-minute mark neared, found inexplicably free in the penalty area to direct a header towards goal from Nathanael Mbuku's set-piece, but Andre Blake collected it safely into his body.

The play flowed heavily in one direction as Les Leopards bombarded the Jamaican net with numerous shots, though Blake faced little real danger after several wayward efforts. It was not until around the 30-minute point that Jamaica posed a threat to the DR Congo goal, when Bobby De Cordova-Reid fed the ball to the fringe of the area for Kasey Palmer, whose powerful strike was stopped for a corner.

Elia then hit the frame of the goal for the African outfit just before the interval, leaving them disappointed at not converting their superiority.

Les Leopards resumed their dominance immediately after the break, as Bakambu again threatened to open the scoring, this time bending a shot from 20 yards that Blake superbly tipped away.

The Jamaicans spent most of the match defending, yet after 60 minutes, the game stayed level. Sebastien Desabre looked to his substitutes for a spark, and one newcomer, Theo Bongonda, pierced the Jamaica backline before passing to Bakambu for an easy finish into an unguarded net, but the Real Betis forward was again ruled offside.

Ultimately, no goals came in regular time, sending the match to extra time, where DR Congo converted their sustained efforts in the 100th minute as Axel Tuanzebe forced the ball over the line from near range following Brian Cipenga’s corner being deflected towards the defender.

Though Jamaica pushed hard in response, they could not penetrate Les Leopards’ rearguard, and despite missed opportunities from Edo Kayembe and Bakambu to extend the lead to 2-0 late on, the African nation clinched their World Cup berth.

They join Group K featuring Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia, whereas Jamaica’s dreams of a second World Cup appearance fade once more after this narrow miss.
