Why Not Curacao? Dick Advocaat Believes in World Cup Shock Against Germany

"It is something special for us to be there. Playing against players you see on television, who compete in the top divisions. Anyone can cause a surprise. Why not Curacao? That is what we will aim to do," said the 78 year old on Thursday at the training camp in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

Advocaat resumed his position as Curaçao manager after Fred Rutten resigned just three months into his spell, having taken over from Advocaat, who left Curaçao to devote more time to his unwell daughter. Advocaat's return was ostensibly demanded by sponsor Corendon and the players, shrouding his comeback in controversy.

"It has been a tough few weeks. A great deal has occurred," said Advocaat, whom the Curaçao Football Federation (FFK) indicated was only contacted after Rutten's departure.

"Matters could have transpired differently. I have not been in touch with Rutten. Just for an hour when I passed on the duties. I did not hesitate to come back. I cannot think of a reason why I would."

Now that the Dutchman is back, he cannot wait to begin after experiencing what it means to be the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup.

"Reaching the next stage is our aim," he said.

"It is without precedent for Curaçao. There is enormous excitement about it. The happiness of those people is so lovely. We in the Netherlands could learn from them. We are looking forward to it."

On June 14, the team from the Caribbean island will face Germany in Houston for their opening match of the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. In Group E, which also includes Ivory Coast and Ecuador, Curaçao are deemed clear underdogs.
