Swiss striker Embolo cannot fly to the USA as travel authorisation is under review

The issue for Embolo follows a Swiss court ruling linked to a 2018 incident in Basel which became final nine months ago.

The Stade Rennais forward was convicted in 2023 of making multiple threats and received a suspended fine, a verdict that was upheld on appeal after judges dismissed his version of events. In April, Swiss media reported that Embolo had chosen not to appeal to the Federal Court, thus finalising the judgement.

"Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is unable to travel to the United States with the team at this time," said the Swiss federation in a statement.

"His ESTA authorisation was approved until this morning. However, at 10:30am we were notified that his ESTA application is now under further review.

"We are in contact with the relevant authorities and expect Breel to either join the team later today or travel tomorrow and meet the squad then."

A spokesperson for the team, who were boarding their flight to Los Angeles, told Reuters that Switzerland had previously travelled to the US to face Mexico and the USA, and that Embolo had been permitted entry.
