Spain 'in good hands' amid three-horse goalkeeper race, David Raya says

David Raya had a remarkable season at Arsenal, assisting the Gunners in securing their first Premier League title in 22 years and achieving a spot in the Champions League final.

Joan Garcia also excelled as Barcelona claimed the La Liga title, but they are reportedly set to be overlooked, with Unai Simon expected to be the starter.

The Athletic Club goalkeeper has been Spain's first-choice keeper for the last three major tournaments, including when La Roja triumphed at Euro 2024.

"I believe Spain is in good hands, no matter who plays," Raya told a press conference on Saturday at Spain's training camp in Chattanooga.

"Since Unai made his debut, he has performed at an exceptionally high level. We have won the Nations League, the Euros with him, and he is a fantastic goalkeeper who has delivered these trophies for us."

Raya, aged 30, has spent the bulk of his career in England.

He moved to Blackburn as a teenager and had a loan spell at sixth-tier Southport before establishing himself in the Premier League with Brentford.

In three years at Arsenal, he has won the Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets in the Premier League each season.

However, much of the discussion in his home country has centred on whether Garcia should be chosen ahead of Simon rather than Raya.

"I have spent many years abroad and I recall the first time I came to the national team, sometimes they asked who I was," he added on whether he has been overlooked in Spain.

"I am doing my job for my club to be the best I can be and to be able to represent my country, which is the most important thing. I am here to support the team as much as possible and to win the second (World Cup) star."

There is little more Raya could have done to persuade De la Fuente after a stunning season at club level.

In addition to ending their lengthy wait to win the Premier League, Mikel Arteta's side also reached a first Champions League final in 20 years, but a penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain prevented them from becoming European champions for the first time.

"Personally, I think it was a very successful season, and collectively it was spectacular," he said.

"We managed to win the Premier League, which was so desired by our fans and by the club. It has been a great season, and I am very happy with my performances as well."

Spain start their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde in Atlanta on Monday before also facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
