South Africa shocks Senegal in opening group clash of 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations
The South African youngsters share their group with Algeria and Ghana, and a loss here to the defending 2023 champions would have complicated their path to the knockout rounds.
Following a subdued opening 45 minutes where they struggled to compete, Vela Khumalos team dominated the latter stages, seizing momentum and securing victory in the closing moments.
The leading two sides from each group progress to the last eight and secure spots at the 2026 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar scheduled for later that year.
The sides finishing third in their groups exit the competition but participate in additional matches to select two further qualifiers for the World Cup, completing Africas contribution of 10 teams to the enlarged event featuring 48 participants.
Senegal opened the scoring in the 44th minute despite squandering numerous clear chances earlier.
Ultimately, it came from a straightforward header off a corner, with Cheikh Thior nodding in Sega Mbodjis cross.
South Africa were frustrated with their set-piece organisation yet had little grounds for complaint about the half-time deficit, having survived on good fortune up to that point and entering the interval trailing 1-0.
They improved markedly post-break and, inside ten minutes, led 2-1.
Leveling terms arrived via Aphelele Majolas precise pass to Mamelodi Sundowns forward Inganathi Simama, who steered the ball beyond keeper Assane Sarr, who might have been expected to stop it but could not prevent the equaliser.
South Africa went ahead shortly after as their commanding resumption persisted. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reotshepile Maletes effort from 25 yards took a deflection off Thior, deceiving the goalkeeper completely and gifting the defender an unfortunate own goal while handing South Africa the advantage.
Senegal believed they had drawn level when Cheikh Dieng unleashed a powerful strike from 35 yards that beat South Africa custodian Lwandiso Radebe of Mamelodi Sundowns, but an offside call in the buildup disallowed it, allowing the South Africans to regain composure.
South Africas subsequent Group D fixture is versus Algeria on Sunday, followed by their concluding group encounter with Ghana on Wednesday.
They have exited at the quarter-final stage in the previous two tournaments, yet claimed second place in 2015 and fourth in 2005. Their sole group-stage elimination occurred in 2007.
This marks their sixth involvement in the finals tournament.
