Pressure builds on Nagelsmann to reinstate Neuer for World Cup following Champions League brilliance
The 40 year old World Cup champion, having stepped away from international commitments in 2024, remains a frequent topic among German supporters. Oliver Baumann serves as the current primary goalkeeper for the national team, with Jonas Urbig and Alexander Nubel set to back him up at the event. Marc Andre ter Stegen finds himself excluded due to successive injuries.
In Tuesdays display, Neuer, who held the role of Germanys lead custodian for 14 years, pulled off a sequence of remarkable stops during the intense match. This included thwarting Real Madrids chief goalscorer Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr on multiple occasions in direct duels, thereby preserving the away sides modest advantage and claiming the standout performer accolade.
German analysts showered him with acclaim, several advocating for his spot in the World Cup roster, while even Real Madrids manager Alvaro Arbeloa acknowledged Neuer's efforts.
"I believe Neuer earned MVP status," stated Arbeloa. "We created numerous opportunities to add more goals, yet we failed to capitalise."
The German setup has traditionally boasted an abundance of elite goalkeepers for major competitions, though the side has experienced notable instability in that position since Neuer's departure from the international scene.
As the World Cup approaches in the United States, Canada, and Mexico come June, with Germany determined to improve after early departures in 2018 and 2022, demands for Neuer's comeback intensify.
Much discussion has surrounded the dynamic between the experienced goalkeeper and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, which has occasionally seemed tense.
During a recent interview, when questioned about whether he had wished the player happy birthday upon reaching 40, the manager admitted he was unaware of the milestone. He has consistently dismissed ideas of coaxing Neuer back from his international hiatus.
However, after his exceptional showing on Tuesday, reporters once again quizzed the goalkeeper on the prospect of rejoining the national squad.
"Theres no need to discuss that whatsoever," Neuer responded to the media.
"Where was our match held today? It was an extraordinary contest. Were steering clear of national team topics right now. Ive made my stance clear, and my focus stays with Bayern."
Although Neuer prefers to channel his energy into club duties, with Bayern contending for a treble, outings like this are sure to increase scrutiny on Nagelsmann.
"Frankly, his showing does not catch me off guard," remarked Bayerns sporting director Max Eberl. "Manuel has maintained this standard all season long. He rescued us in key moments today."
When pressed on the idea of a national team comeback, Eberl replied: "The national team managers decisions are not mine to make."
