Nuno Espirito Santo to continue as West Ham manager following relegation to Championship
The Portuguese manager held discussions with the club on Monday, one day after West Ham's 3-0 victory over Leeds on the Premier League's final day. However, they were relegated when their London rivals Tottenham Hotspur defeated Everton.
There was speculation that Nuno could depart the London Stadium, even though he had overseen a revival in form from January to April. During that period, the Hammers earned 22 points from 13 fixtures.
However, three losses in the last four league matches proved decisive, as Spurs avoided relegation at West Ham's expense.
"We held meetings with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo earlier this week and are pleased to confirm that he has expressed his ongoing commitment to the club, and we have done the same," said a West Ham statement.
"Nuno made it clear that he is extremely motivated by the challenge of leading West Ham United back to the Premier League at the first attempt. That must be the unequivocal objective for next season," the statement continued.
Nuno has one previous season in the EFL Championship (the second division of English football) and it was a resounding success. He accumulated 99 points to claim the title with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018.
"Although the final result on Sunday was disappointing, the board feels that there have been wider indications of improvement and progress in recent months, and we want Nuno to continue that development," the statement added.
