Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes accuses Roy Keane of lying after breaking record

Fernandes achieved a record 21 assists for United in the Premier League this season after setting up Patrick Dorgu's goal during their 3-0 triumph against Brighton.

The Portuguese midfielder matched the previous benchmark held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne during United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

Former United star Roy Keane has criticised Fernandes' focus on personal achievements rather than team success.

Keane remarked on The Overlap podcast: "Following the Forest match, he admitted in an interview that he prioritized assists over shots. That's not how a captain should think."

He added: "Such an individualistic approach won't bring trophies to Manchester United."

However Keane misquoted Fernandes who actually stated: "There were instances where passing was better than shooting. I'm pleased with the assist but happier about the team's victory."

Fernandes responded sharply to Keane's comments during an interview.

"I welcome fair criticism," Fernandes said on The Diary of a CEO podcast. "But fabricating statements is unacceptable. Roy Keane's version of events simply didn't happen."

"People can dislike me as a player or person but shouldn't invent quotes," he continued.

The United captain's outstanding performances this campaign contributed significantly to their third place finish earning him both FWA and Premier League Player of the Season honours.

Fernandes revealed he reached out to former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to address the misunderstanding with Keane directly.

"I've always respected Roy Keane's contributions," Fernandes explained. "My issue isn't with criticism but with being misquoted."
