Kieran McKenna departs newly promoted Ipswich to take a break from management
McKenna, aged 40, has made a remarkable impact at Ipswich, guiding them from League One to the Premier League, only to be relegated back to the Championship in the 2024-25 season.
The Northern Irishman has now led them back to the top tier of English football and has been strongly associated with a transfer to Fulham.
Nevertheless, McKenna has now taken the surprising decision to resign from Ipswich and will take a sabbatical from the sport.
The former Manchester United coach still had two years remaining on his contract with the club, and it is understood that Ipswich are financially safeguarded if he decides to accept a new role within the next 12 months.
Speaking on behalf of the club, McKenna stated: "It is with a blend of gratitude, pride, sorrow and contentment that I have decided to resign from the privilege of managing this historic football club.
"When you have the bond that we have created at this club there is never an ideal moment to part ways. However, having secured a second promotion to the Premier League last season, with another unforgettable final day at our stadium, and after contemplation over the past fortnight, I believe this is the appropriate moment for me to stand down.
"I do this with immense pride at the remarkable progress we have achieved and with great hope and optimism for the club's future.
"Managing this club has been a complete honour. Over the past five seasons, we have embarked on an extraordinary journey that has delivered some of the finest moments in my professional and personal life.
"After devoting so much to the role over the preceding five seasons, I now anticipate taking a rest from management and spending some time with my family, who have accompanied me at every stage of my career thus far.
"There are numerous people I wish to thank who have contributed to this journey. First, to Mark Ashton and the Board for granting me the chance, at 35 years of age, to manage such a huge football club, and for the steadfast support and confidence they have demonstrated ever since.
"To my coaching team and all the fantastic staff at Portman Road and our Playford Road training facility, who work unceasingly to advance the club in all respects. To all the players who have represented the club with professionalism and enthusiasm over the past five years.
"Most importantly, thanks to the incredible fans and supporters of Ipswich Town. You have followed this football club through splendid highs and challenging lows.
"I will be eternally grateful for the manner in which you welcomed me and my family, both to the football club and to the county of Suffolk. I will treasure the memories we have shared together for the remainder of my life.
"Ipswich Town will forever hold a special place in our hearts."
