'It feels great': Salah says goodbye to Merseyside Derby with telling Liverpool goal
The 33-year-old forward, having revealed plans to depart Anfield by the seasons close, waved goodbye to Liverpools local opponents in his characteristic manner, securing the initial strike for his squad during their narrow 2-1 Premier League triumph.
Through this achievement, Salah levelled with past Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard to share the record for most goals in Premier League Merseyside derbies, totalling nine, prior to skipper Virgil van Dijk delivering an ideal conclusion via a late decisive goal.
"It feels great," Salah told Sky Sports when asked about scoring in his final derby. "The most important thing was to help the team to settle down and feel more confident. We knew before the game it was going to be tricky, difficult, and I’m glad we were able to win it."
Liverpool found themselves on the defensive during the early stages versus a vibrant Everton outfit, however Salah calmed the situation with a poised finish, granting the away team a lead in the 29th minute at Evertons fresh Hill Dickinson Stadium, marking the debut derby there.
"There will be a lot of words coming out of my mouth in the next couple of weeks about him, but he's so important for us, on and off the pitch," Van Dijk said of Salah.
"The appreciation sometimes comes when players are gone, but we appreciate him so much. He's an outstanding teammate to have, we've been through everything together, highs and lows. He will still be important for the last five games we have to play," he added.
Having scored three goals across his most recent three Premier League outings, Salahs performance has notably enhanced following an underwhelming year, yet he insists further contributions remain within reach.
"I wish I just keep scoring, and help the team to achieve Champions League this season - hopefully I say farewell in the right way," Salah said.
