Leaving Andoni Iraola describes Europa League qualification as the 'ideal conclusion'

The 43 year old Spaniard, who announced in April that he would depart the club at the end of the campaign after taking over in 2023, orchestrated a remarkable ascent that culminated in Bournemouth's highest ever Premier League finish.

"I am quite tough but I have come very close (to tears). I could not ask for anything more," Iraola told BBC Sport.

"I have been incredibly fortunate to be in this position with this group of players and this club. I believe it is the ideal conclusion and I am very grateful."

Bournemouth, who were in the third tier of English football 13 years ago, will compete in Europe for the first time in their history.

Iraola stated that securing a European place had not been part of his initial ambitions, as his main ‌goal was to transform the team's playing style.

"I had no idea (about reaching Europe when I joined)," he said.

"The club's first priority, beyond results, was to change the style, change the approach, become more attacking and proactive – that is why they hired me. The club was focused on that, and that is what attracted me to the role.

"I knew it was almost unattainable to get into Europe but the ‌owner told me from the start, 'I want Europe.' To end the three seasons by giving back, not only to the owner but also to the fans and players, is one way of expressing my thanks."

Bournemouth finished the season with ‌57 points, winning 13 of their 38 matches.
