Big blow for Danes as Harder is ruled doubtful for crucial World Cup qualifier

Denmark's captain, Pernille Harder, is a doubtful starter for Friday's decisive World Cup qualifier against Sweden.

The Bayern Munich star arrived at the national team camp in Odense carrying a muscle injury.

"It is not a serious injury, but the timing is far from ideal. I have been training on my own, and we will have to wait and see what I am ready for", Harder said on Tuesday afternoon.

A win or a draw against Sweden would move Denmark a significant step closer to next summer's World Cup in Brazil, but a Swedish victory would deny them the chance to control their own destiny.

Harder will do everything she can to be ready, but will not risk everything.

"Both the club and the national team want to do things properly. We will not take any risks that might worsen the injury and lead to a longer spell on the sidelines, even though there is a holiday coming up soon", Harder added.

While Harder still has a chance of being fit for the Sweden match, key players Janni Thomsen and Stine Sandbech are definitely unavailable.

Both played a major role in the surprising 2-1 victory over the Swedes in Gothenburg.

"The last few days have not been dull. Losing Janni and Stine is a big setback, and now Pernille is also doubtful. It is a full plate of challenges. I cannot pretend otherwise. These are top players", said national coach Jakob Michelsen.

Denmark will complete their World Cup qualifying group campaign against Serbia on Tuesday. Four points from the two matches would secure top spot in the group and a place at the World Cup.
