Super League

The Swiss Super League, or Credit Suisse Super League for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier soccer league in Switzerland. This league has changed its name and format several times, which led to a rebranding back in 2021 to fit its new sponsor. The competition is played by twelve teams, with five of them having the chance to play in European competitions the following year.

The competition kicks off in late July, with a winter break being held between December and January. Each team faces its rivals three times during the first stage, when the twelve teams are split into two groups. The top six fight for the championship and the lower six teams aim to avoid relegation. After the initial 33 games, each club plays five more matches in the second stage, where the club with the most points wins the title and the club with the worst record is relegated to the Challenge League. The next-to-last team in the overall table enters a relegation playoff against a team from the lower tier, meaning there could be two relegated teams by the end of each season.

As mentioned before, the league hands out five spots to play in European tournaments. The top two teams enter the preliminary stages of the UEFA Champions League, while one more club earns access to the playoff rounds in the Europa League. Additionally, two more teams enter the previous stages of the UEFA Conference League.

The league grants a gold star for those teams who can win ten titles. Two teams, Grasshopper and Basel, have been able to win two stars on their crest respectively thanks to their performance in this league.
