Newly promoted FC Thun win Swiss Super League to claim first trophy in club history

The 3-0 victory by FC Sion over St Gallen ensures that the team from Bernese Oberland remains uncatchable at the summit of the Swiss League for the rest of the fixtures.

Throughout this campaign in the Swiss Super League, FC Thun has emerged as the standout performers, taking control of the title race from October onwards and surpassing established powerhouses like FC Basel and BSC Young Boys, all while operating on a much tighter financial scale.

The narrative of a freshly promoted side challenging for honours is rare in European football, with parallels over the past half century including Nottingham Forests 1978 conquest or FC Kaiserslauterns Bundesliga achievement some twenty years on.

In terms of silverware, Thuns track record has been rather unremarkable. They initially ascended to the top flight in 1954, only to drop down soon after, spending the subsequent years mostly in the divisions below. Their re entry to the top tier in 2001 signalled the start of a steadier era.

Prior to this term, their highest league position was runner up in 2005, trailing Basel. The following year saw them advance to the UEFA Champions League group stage, where they overcame Sparta Prague and posed significant challenges to Arsenal, forcing the English side to fight intensely in both encounters with the Swiss outfit.

Mauro Lustrinelli, the present head coach, featured in that European adventure and has guided the team to their most impressive feat yet, securing a Champions League return two decades later.

Although they have appeared in the Swiss Cup final on two prior occasions, Thun had not secured any significant honour until this breakthrough season elevated their remarkable journey to its climax.
