Nantes relegated to Ligue 2 after suffering narrow defeat at title-chasing Lens

The away team recognised that a win was essential to maintain their dwindling chances of avoiding the drop, yet the hosts generated the superior chances during a tightly fought opening period.

Wesley Said nearly put Lens ahead just eight minutes in, as he collected a diagonal ball before advancing into the box and firing a shot low across the goalkeeper, which Anthony Lopes parried confidently at his post. Moments later, Abdallah Sima connected with a delivery into the penalty area, but the Nantes backline recovered swiftly to deflect his effort clear.

Les Sang et Or began the match with real intent, and they threatened again soon afterwards when Rayan Fofana's quick strike from close range was stopped right on the line. Nantes had pulled off a surprise triumph against Marseille in their previous outing to sustain their battle against relegation, and despite not managing a single effort on target before the interval, they could take satisfaction from remaining firmly in the match.

The visitors had secured only two triumphs on the road from their base at Stade de la Beaujoire throughout the campaign, but they displayed considerable resolve against a Lens outfit still vying for the championship.

Nantes almost snatched the opener eleven minutes into the second half, as a lofted pass found its way into the box where Johann Lepenant struck a first-time volley towards the far bottom corner, only for Robin Risser to dive and produce a fine stop. At that point, the away side appeared more dangerous, but fortune soon favoured them when Lens saw two strikes disallowed within a couple of minutes.

The first involved Said being caught offside, followed immediately by a decision that Sima had used his hand prior to bursting into the area and beating Lopes with a clinical finish.

Yet, Nantes' destiny was confirmed with twelve minutes left to play, as Les Sang et Or finally succeeded on their third attempt when a lengthy throw reached Mezian Soares inside the box, and the midfielder calmly converted from point-blank range to shatter the visitors' resolve.

This outcome positions Lens just three points behind pacesetters Paris Saint-Germain, though with an additional fixture completed, whereas Nantes are now certain to end up 17th and face a return to the second division after 4,732 days since their ascent in May 2013.
