The Persian Gulf Pro League is the top-tier league in Iran. This competition, which was also known as the Persian Gulf Cup, was founded in 1970 but has only been a pro league since 2001. The season typically kicks off in July/August and wraps up in April/March of the following year. The league boasts a promotion/relegation system, with the bottom two sides at the end of the season dropping to the Azadegan League, Iran’s second division.
