Yamal Secures Draw for Barcelona Against Newcastle, Liverpool Defeated, Atletico Overpower Tottenham in Champions League

Lamine Yamal converted a dramatic late penalty to rescue a 1-1 draw for Barcelona away to Newcastle United in the opening leg of their Champions League knockout clash on Tuesday, as Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul, repeating an earlier loss this term.

Atletico Madrid added to Tottenham Hotspur's woes with a convincing 5-2 victory on a disastrous night for Spurs' stand-in keeper Antonin Kinsky, while Bayern Munich virtually sealed their place in the quarter-finals by demolishing Atalanta 6-1 in Italy.

At St James' Park, Newcastle appeared poised for a memorable win when Harvey Barnes netted in the 86th minute, finishing off a cross from Jacob Murphy for his sixth goal in this season's Champions League.

But Barcelona earned a spot-kick in added time after Dani Olmo was brought down by Malick Thiaw, and Yamal, who had been quiet until then, slotted it home with the final touch of the game in the 96th minute.

This result complicates Newcastle's challenge for the return fixture at the Camp Nou next Wednesday, where they seek to advance to the last eight for the first time.

"We still have belief, absolutely. We trust in our abilities and what we can do. I feel we proved that tonight," remarked Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

The victors of this matchup seem set to encounter Atletico in the next round, following Diego Simeone's team dismantling Spurs at the Metropolitano, highlighted by Julian Alvarez's brace.

It proved a tough evening for faltering Tottenham and particularly grim for their Czech shot-stopper Kinsky, whose prior outings this season were limited to the League Cup.

A botched clearance from Kinsky allowed Marcos Llorente to fire in Atletico's opener in the sixth minute, and Antoine Griezmann capitalised on a Micky van de Ven error to extend the lead.

Just 15 minutes in, Kinsky's wayward first-time pass handed possession to Alvarez, who made it 3-0.

The 22-year-old's ordeal worsened as manager Igor Tudor hooked him, yet substitute Guglielmo Vicario was unable to stop Robin Le Normand's header, reaching 4-0 by the first half's midpoint.

Pedro Porro responded for Spurs, but Alvarez charged from midfield after a clever Antoine Griezmann pass to notch Atletico's fifth soon after the break.

Dominic Solanke struck on 76 minutes to narrow the gap to 5-2, offering a faint spark for the away side ahead of the second leg.

Bayern's Impressive Rout

That said, reversing Tottenham's current skid, which includes four straight losses under Tudor and six in a row total, looks daunting.

"Regrettably, those errors occurred in such a key match. We suffered for that poor beginning, it overwhelmed us," said Tudor, explaining his decision to withdraw the shaken Kinsky as a protective measure.

"In 15 years of coaching, I have never done that. But it was essential to shield the player and the squad."

Earlier in the day, Liverpool fell to a solitary strike against Galatasaray, mirroring their league-phase meeting in Turkey.

Mario Lemina netted the decider for the Turkish champions, nodding in from near range off a Victor Osimhen flick-on from a corner.

Osimhen thought he had scored again post-interval, but an offside call spared Liverpool.

The Merseysiders must raise their game significantly to overturn the deficit at Anfield next week.

"It's always a tough venue, but trailing 1-0 intensifies the difficulty," noted Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.

Bayern affirmed their position among the tournament favourites by overwhelming Atalanta in Bergamo, with Michael Olise delivering a standout performance.

Without Harry Kane, Josip Stanisic opened the scoring with a simple tap-in, and Olise added a fine strike to double the advantage before the break.

Olise then assisted Serge Gnabry for 3-0, with Gnabry also striking the woodwork late in the half.

Nicolas Jackson claimed the fourth shortly after restart, Olise elegantly curled in the fifth, his 15th this campaign.

Jamal Musiala rounded off the scoring with the sixth, leaving Atalanta with scant hope despite Mario Pasalic's late consolation in added time.
