Throngs of Fans Welcome Morocco's Under-20 World Cup Champions Home
Thousands of supporters in Rabat welcomed the Moroccan squad on Wednesday with a festive parade marking their landmark success at the Under-20 World Cup from the previous week.
This win made Morocco the pioneering Arab nation to secure the competition, prevailing 2-0 against leading contenders Argentina in Sundays showdown in Santiago, the Chilean capital.
Prior to the procession, Moroccan Crown Prince Moulay Hassan oversaw a tribute event for the players at the royal residence.
The athletes then travelled along Rabats roads in a convertible bus, cheered by enthusiastic crowds and accompanied by the noise of vuvuzelas.
"Its a remarkable accomplishment, they brought us immense happiness and proudly raised our national flag," said Youssef, a 34-year-old salesperson, to AFP.
Yassir Zabiri, a midfielder for Portugals Famalicao, bagged a brace in the decisive match, concluding the event as co-leading marksman with five goals.
"Our footballs prospects are secure. Congratulations team, U20 world champions," shared Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi on social platforms, the player who guided the senior side to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.
Morocco is scheduled to stage the Africa Cup of Nations this year and will share hosting duties for the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
