Sonderjyske secure narrow victory at Viborg, denting hosts' third-place aspirations

Sonderjyske have re-entered the medal contention in the Danish Superliga following a 1-0 triumph on the road against Viborg.

Only recently, Sonderjyske appeared destined to miss out on any silverware after suffering a heavy 0-6 loss at Brondby.

Yet, this Friday's success keeps Sonderjyske in the mix for the third position contest.

FC Nordsjaelland holds the bronze spot at present, leading Viborg and Sonderjyske by two points. That said, FC Nordsjaelland possesses an extra fixture and faces FC Midtjylland this Sunday.

Viborg began the Friday encounter brightly, fashioning an excellent opportunity in the 17th minute as Thomas Jorgensen delivered a superb pass to Asker Beck.

However, Asker Beck, fresh off a brace in the previous 3-3 stalemate with FC Midtjylland, failed to find precision and fired his shot astray.

Towards the close of the opening period, Sonderjyske seized control and generated openings of their own. With ten minutes left until half-time, winger Olti Hyseni prodded the ball directly at Viborg's goalkeeper Lucas Lund despite having an open target.

The frame of the goal then thwarted a strike from Sonderjyske's Sefer Emini, while forward Matthew Hoppe forced Lund into action in the Viborg net prior to the interval, though the scoreline stayed level.

Merely four minutes after the restart, Sonderjyske capitalised on their impetus to take the advantage, as Hyseni crossed low into the area for the advancing Emini, who rifled the ball high into the net.

From there, Viborg assumed dominance of possession, as the away side valiantly protected their slim margin. In stoppage time, Viborg's Dorian Junior missed a prime header, allowing Sonderjyske to cling on for the points.
