Schroder goal secures Hacken advantage in Europa Cup final opener against Hammarby

This represented the debut European final pitting two Swedish sides against each other in men's or women's football, with the players stepping onto the 3Arena turf amid loud cheers from the local crowd. However, that buzz failed to calm Hammarby's anxiety, as skipper Alice Carlsson delivered an uncomfortable backpass to goalkeeper Melina Loeck during the third minute, which the German stopper scarcely cleared in time.

Just as anticipated, Felicia Schroder served as the centrepiece of Hacken's offensive efforts, creating the match's initial opportunity by controlling the ball neatly yet firing astray while Loeck narrowed the angle.

Soon enough, the away team's backline faced mounting pressure, with a vital interception stopping Sofia Reidy's volley from a set piece, and following Stine Sandbech's yellow card 15 minutes into play for a clumsy foul near the box, Vilma Koivisto bent a driven free-kick narrowly beyond the upright.

Swedish forward Monica Jusu Bah began exploiting space along Hacken's left flank, dispossessing Carlsson before attempting a long-range lob over Loeck, though the diving keeper parried it away using her feet. Yet, halfway through the opening period, Jusu Bah's renewed escape proved expensive for the home team.

Carlsson's challenging day worsened as she lunged at a pass, but her miss allowed Jusu Bah ample space to cross into the penalty area, where Schroder calmly slotted home her fifth tournament strike beyond Loeck.

Schroder nearly claimed her sixth shortly after, breaking clear on the right wing, but instead of shooting directly, she tried to assist Jusu Bah in return, only for Carlsson to recover and disrupt the winger, resulting in a wayward effort.

This appeared to test the limits of Bajen's rearguard, which coped with further threats up to the interval. Meanwhile, the home side struggled to level the score, as Reidy tested Fanney Birkisdottir with a bending shot, the Icelandic shot-stopper then collected a weak attempt from Svea Rehnberg, and watched Fanny Peterson's header drift off target pre-break.

Manager William Stromberg stuck with his original lineup at the start of the second half, during which his charges dominated early, though Koivisto's distant strike that veered wide just three minutes in stood as their sole clear-cut moment.

Minutes later, Anna Anvegard came perilously close to demonstrating the right technique to Koivisto, striking from outside the box only to see it rebound off the woodwork, with Schroder then skewing the rebound astray.

Nearing the hour, Hammarby introduced Vilde Hasund, who swiftly injected flair into the forward play, yet the quality remained absent, as Koivisto and Elin Sorum soared shots over the bar, while Stina Lennartsson's delivery clipped the post and cleared.

Nevertheless, Elena Sadiku's squad, fresh from eliminating strong contenders Eintracht Frankfurt in the last four, dictated the pace during the closing 10 minutes, restricting the hosts to a wayward Lennartsson header. In the 87th minute, Hammarby crafted one of the contest's finest moves, but Emilie Joramo failed to cap it with a decisive touch.

Hacken, who edged Hammarby for the top spot in the 2025 Allsvenskan Women, wrapped up a 1-0 success, marking their fifth victory in the past six clashes, which they carry to Gothenburg for the second leg on Friday 1st May.

Excluding the return fixture loss to Sporting Club in the quarters that they overturned via spot-kicks, this stands as Hammarby's initial setback since their October league defeat to Hacken. They now need to hand Getingarna only their second reverse since September to overturn the aggregate.
