Mourinho Marks Benfica Comeback with Solid Victory

Jose Mourinho kicked off his return as Benfica manager with an easy 3-0 victory over AVS on Saturday.

The away side took the lead through Heorhiy Sudakov just before halftime, followed by Vangelis Pavlidis converting a penalty for the second goal shortly before the hour.

Franjo Ivanovic sealed the comprehensive win for Benfica, propelling them into second place in the standings, trailing leaders Porto by five points after one game less.

The experienced Portuguese manager, resuming control of the Eagles after 25 years, reacted with intense joy to the third goal, clenching his fist and boot ing a training cone.

This 62 year old tactician, who previously led Porto in Portugals premier league until his 2004 departure for Chelsea, is set to encounter both clubs in the coming two weeks.

Mourinho, a champion with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Inter Milan among his many stints, parted ways with Fenerbahce in August after dismissal.

Benfica removed manager Bruno Lage earlier this week following an unexpected Champions League loss to Azerbaijans underdogs Qarabag, installing Mourinho as successor on Thursday.

His initial tenure at the club spanned only 11 matches, yet during his unveiling, Mourinho noted his current greater maturity and selflessness.
