Mainoo 'being ruined' at Man Utd: Scholes

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes claims that Kobbie Mainoo is getting damaged by the limited opportunities he is receiving under manager Ruben Amorim, and he believes the young players ideal path forward is to depart from Old Trafford.

The 20 year old enjoyed a remarkable 2023/24 campaign, culminating in the youth product netting a goal during the FA Cup final and securing a place in the England team.

However, the midfielder has shifted from featuring in the starting lineup for the Euro 2024 final to facing challenges in securing minutes at United.

He sought a temporary transfer in August, yet the club rejected the request.

Mainoo, who remains without a Premier League starting appearance this term, stayed on the sidelines during Thursdays 1-1 stalemate against struggling West Ham.

This underwhelming outcome positioned United in eighth place in the Premier League before their Monday visit to league bottom dwellers Wolves.

United head coach Amorim mentioned last week that he views Mainoo as a regular starter, but Scholes expressed frustration in a now removed Instagram post that shared the coaches statement.

The kid is getting spoiled, he is not featuring in a side unable to dominate a match, commented the ex United and England midfielder, who lifted 11 Premier League trophies at Old Trafford.

I dislike watching academy talents depart, yet it might be the right move for him at this stage, he has endured plenty.

Mainoo sole outing in the starting XI for United this season occurred in Augusts embarrassing League Cup defeat at Grimsby, and Amorims hesitation to involve him has sparked significant discussion.

I get your perspective, Amorim responded to journalists on Thursday after the West Ham tie.

You adore Kobbie. He has been starting for England, but that does not force me to include him if I believe it is not the moment, so the choice is mine.

Mainoo earned his most recent of 10 England appearances in September 2024 and seems improbable to join Thomas Tuchels roster for the following years World Cup.

Amorim acknowledged that the scarcity of playing time might discourage the midfielder, but emphasised his priority is securing victories.

I simply aim to field the strongest possible lineup, he noted.

When questioned about potential openings for Mainoo due to the impending absences of Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo at the Africa Cup of Nations, Amorim replied: I am uncertain about the developments. It hinges on circumstances.

If training shows it is optimal, I will make the change. That remains my approach to such matters.
