Maguire encourages Manchester United to capitalise on Liverpool victory
Harry Maguire emphasised that Manchester United should capitalise on their current drive after an eagerly awaited success against Liverpool delivered manager Ruben Amorim his initial pair of consecutive Premier League triumphs.
The defender netted a header in the 84th minute to clinch a 2-1 victory over the title holders on Sunday, with United now securing four wins from their previous six outings.
The side, which dropped to 15th in the Premier League standings last campaign, has risen to ninth after the Anfield conquest, trailing third-placed Bournemouth and fourth-placed Liverpool by merely two points.
Yet ex-United skipper Maguire believes the group ought to harness the outcome, their debut win at Anfield in almost ten years, as a foundation for progress.
"This team might receive some praise this week for resilience and determination," he remarked.
"However, if we fail to deliver against Brighton next weekend, the acclaim will fade by the following one, so we must develop on it, foster momentum, and deliver strong showings, which is the key priority.
"Strong displays ultimately lead to successes. Draw the benefits, gain the assurance, but at Old Trafford against Brighton next week, we must ensure we excel and secure the points."
In the previous season's encounter at Liverpool, Maguire missed a prime opportunity for a late winner in a game that concluded 2-2, so he was thrilled to convert this occasion.
The England player could have appeared for United at Anfield for the last time, given his deal concludes at the campaign's end.
"I have spent seven years here, and it has been challenging without that success, it has lingered in my thoughts somewhat," noted the 32-year-old.
"With this being my final season, this might be my closing match at Anfield with the club, so it was vital to achieve it and resolve that lingering thought."
