Luis Garcia Plaza comes in as Sevilla boss aiming to change club's fortunes

Sevilla ended last season in 17th position in La Liga. They sit 15th at present yet only three points clear of the drop zone.

In a statement released on Tuesday the club declared: "Sevilla FC has agreed terms with coach Luis Garcia Plaza, born in Madrid" and noted that the incoming manager "will lead the senior squad until 30 June 2027" .

The 53 year old has lacked employment since his removal from Alaves in December 2024 although he possesses vast expertise from overseeing 229 La Liga fixtures across stints with Levante Getafe Villarreal and Alaves.

Moreover he has led sides in the United Arab Emirates China and Saudi Arabia.

Almeyda brought in for the current campaign after guiding the squad through 32 official outings got the boot following a 2 to 0 setback versus Valencia last Saturday which intensified Sevilla's struggle against relegation.

Sevilla last lifted a Spanish home competition trophy with their 2010 Copa del Rey success yet they have secured the UEFA Cup along with its renamed Europa League on seven occasions from 2006 onwards.
