Iraq clinch World Cup qualification after 40-year absence with tense win over Bolivia

Given the immense pressure at play, many anticipated a tentative beginning to the match, yet Iraq surged ahead energetically, hunting for an initial advantage.

The Lions of Mesopotamia came perilously near to opening the scoring after merely nine minutes via a brilliantly executed free kick by Amir Al-Ammari, though Guillermo Viscarra pulled off a remarkable stop to deflect the ball against the crossbar.

Still, Viscarra proved unable to aid Bolivia moments afterwards. A superb corner by Al-Ammari located Ali Al-Hamadi within the penalty area, where his forceful header rocketed into the net, triggering massive jubilation.

Bolivia responded resiliently to the deficit, steadily gaining momentum in the encounter, which led to them drawing level under ten minutes from the break.

A wayward shot from Ramiro Vaca accidentally looped towards Moises Paniagua, who controlled it skilfully and slotted home from near range beyond Ahmed Basil to restore parity.

As the second period commenced with the score balanced, Iraq's leader Aymen Hussein seized control, propelling his team back into the lead.

Replacement Marko Farji influenced proceedings immediately, threading an accurate pass to Hussein ideally placed to convert from the box and claim his 33rd international strike.

Anxiety gripped the fixture after the mid-second-half drinks pause, as each team yearned for a landmark triumph. This fostered a disjointed battle, but it remained captivating throughout.

Approaching the final whistle, Arnold's squad enjoyed a prime chance to seal the points decisively, although Mohanad Ali fired his effort high when greater poise might have sufficed.

Notwithstanding that missed opportunity, Iraq endured to secure one of the most pivotal triumphs in their squad's legacy. This marks just their second qualification for the FIFA World Cup, whereas Bolivia's drought since 1994 for a return persists.

The triumph grants Iraq a berth in Group I this summer with France, Norway, and Senegal, a challenging group for progression, but they have rightfully arrived at the grand tournament.
