Gordon grateful for Mourinho praise after Newcastle beat Benfica

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon described the praise from Benfica manager Jose Mourinho following the Magpies' Champions League triumph over the Portuguese team on Tuesday as a major honour.

The 24 year old England striker netted the opener, marking his fourth goal in the tournament across three matches this term, and provided the assist for the final strike in a convincing 3 0 success at St James' Park, thrilling over 52,000 spectators.

Gordon received widespread acclaim post match, yet Mourinho's comments, shared during a chat with the ex Everton player at full time, resonated deeply.

When quizzed on the experienced Portuguese coach's remarks, Gordon shared: "He told me 'You're too much', which feels like a huge compliment since as a youngster, he was my top manager worldwide.

"It's odd because he often coached defensively, yet I adore how the sideline would erupt. He fosters a united squad vibe, like battling the rest together. I see parallels in my own approach, making it a significant endorsement.

"It carries real weight. Even without my admiration, praise from any elite manager matters greatly."

The win propelled Newcastle to seventh in the standings, earning six points from their initial three fixtures.

Gordon opened the scoring by finishing Jacob Murphy's precise delivery after 32 minutes, then substitute Harvey Barnes made it two with 19 minutes left, before Gordon set up Barnes for his brace.

"Our starting wingers performed superbly," noted Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

"Seeing them link for the opener was delightful.

"Anthony was straightforward and athletically outstanding. He invested massively on and off the pitch."

Gordon, in turn, commended Nick Woltemade for the clever return pass from the £69 million ($92 million) Germany forward ahead of Newcastle's third.

"I was uncertain about his playing style upon arrival, how it would mesh with mine," Gordon admitted. "It's been fantastic, truthfully. I never expected such synergy.

"He complements my approach perfectly. He spots those quick passes I favour around the corner, my winger trait. Few forwards adapt to that, but his initial controls and subtle touches, particularly for the third, are elite quality."
