Germany World Cup champion Boateng declares retirement

Jerome Boateng, the former German defender and 2014 World Cup victor, officially declared his retirement from football on Friday.

The 37 year old central defender shared a one minute video on his social media platforms on Friday, where he said his goodbyes to the sport.

"I have competed for many years, with major teams and representing my nation. I have gained knowledge, achieved victories, suffered defeats, and developed personally throughout," Boateng stated in the Instagram video, which featured key moments from his professional journey.

"The sport has provided me with so much, and now it is the moment to advance. Not out of necessity, but because I feel prepared.

"I express my thanks to the clubs, the supporters, and everyone who stood by me. Most importantly, to my family and my kids. They have supported me constantly."

The defender represented Germany on 76 occasions, netting a single goal.

Boateng secured two Champions League trophies alongside Bayern Munich, in 2013 and 2020, in addition to nine Bundesliga titles.

Born in Berlin, Boateng progressed through the Hertha Berlin youth system with his half brother Kevin Prince, who is one year older.

Following short periods at Hamburg and Manchester City, Jerome Boateng joined Bayern.

After departing Bayern in 2021, Boateng experienced stints with various teams across different nations, including Lyon in France, Salernitana in Italy, and LASK in Austria.

He ended his agreement with LASK during mid August.

Towards the end of his playing days, Boateng faced a court case connected to claims of domestic violence from his former spouse.

Following an examination of the matter, he was issued with a caution and a conditional penalty.
