Gavi to undergo knee operation on meniscus injury: Barcelona

FC Barcelona announced that midfielder Gavi will have surgery on his damaged meniscus after alternative treatments proved unsuccessful, the Catalan club stated on Monday.

The 21 year old player has been sidelined since the end of August owing to this issue, and the team noted that he is scheduled for a knee arthroscopy on Tuesday.

This concerns the same knee where he previously dealt with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and a further meniscus tear in 2023.

After initially following a conservative treatment plan to address the injury, Gavi completed intensive athletic stress assessments on Sunday, the La Liga title holders explained.

"In order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action, this Tuesday Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination," Barca said in a statement.

His earlier knee procedure in November 2023 resulted in a full year away from the game.

Barca offered no details regarding the anticipated timeframe for Gavi's comeback.

However, the club also reported that Fermin Lopez, who appeared for 30 minutes in Sunday's 3-0 triumph against Getafe, has sustained a muscle injury in his hip.

"He will be out of action for around three weeks," Barca said.

Gavi and Lopez are now alongside players such as forward Lamine Yamal, defender Alejandro Balde, and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen among those receiving medical attention.
