Ex-Manchester Utd star Lingard announces South Korea exit

Ex-Manchester United and England player Jesse Lingard announced on Friday that he plans to depart from FC Seoul after two years in South Korean football next week.

The 32 year old surprisingly joined the K League in February of the previous year and featured in more than 60 matches for FC Seoul, yet he did not secure any trophies.

His final match with the team will occur at home against Melbourne City in the AFC Champions League on December 10.

He offered no hints about his future destination, but FC Seoul noted that he expressed a wish to advance to the subsequent phase of his professional journey.

Lingard, who was with United for 22 years prior to his exit from Old Trafford in 2022, described ending his contract in the South Korean capital as a challenging choice.

"My experience in South Korea has been incredible the football, the vibe, and the enthusiasm surrounding this club have all been exceptional," he shared via social media.

"The affection, backing, and regard you have given me over these past two years have been genuinely outstanding."

Lingard faced a difficult beginning in Seoul, facing open criticism from his manager and sitting out a significant portion of the early season due to an injury.

However, the offensive midfielder bounced back, assuming the captaincy and guiding his squad to a mid table position in each of the two campaigns.

"I wish to express my gratitude to FC Seoul, my fellow players, the coaching staff, and all involved with the club for their faith in me and warm reception right from the start," he added.

"I will forever appreciate the chance to represent such a prominent team."

FC Seoul stated that Lingard, holder of 32 England international appearances, is departing with their full support.

"He attracted remarkable public interest and became an emblematic presence for both the club and the wider K League," the club declared in an official release.
