Didier Drogba Prepared to Partner with Tanzania for 2027 AFCON Preparations

Drogba, currently in Tanzania, shared these comments following dedicated discussions with President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He expressed delight at the welcome from the Ministry of Sports and the President personally, outlining ways he could assist in readying for this key African event.

Tanzania’s leader had asked Drogba to serve as the nation’s representative for the 2027 PAMOJA AFCON, set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania between June 19th and July 17th.

President Hassan posed this suggestion on May 5th, chatting with Drogba right upon his arrival at Chamwino State House in Dodoma. The former forward also joined the Tanzania budget speech delivered by Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda, thanks to a personal invite.

Drogba’s Knowledge Will Prove Essential

“We are confident that Drogba’s knowledge will prove essential in building enduring sports facilities that aid our emerging athletes,” stated a Ministry representative after the talks.

Drogba, in response, appreciated President Hassan’s welcome and voiced his eagerness to work alongside the Tanzanian authorities on multiple sports advancement initiatives.

Drogba, Ivory Coast’s leading goalscorer ever and fourth on the list of top African male international football scorers, replied: “I feel privileged by President Hassan’s offer and anticipate aiding Tanzania’s sports ambitions.”

Moreover, President Hassan instructed the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports to team up with the footballer on sharing insights about managing sports facilities nationwide (Sports Academies), aiming to bolster national sports growth.

Drogba, a player renowned for global triumphs and guiding his country to two Africa Cup of Nations finals, noted the substantial strides by the Tanzanian administration in advancing sports.

Drogba, honoured as African Footballer of the Year in 2006 and 2009, pointed to the budget rise in the sector from modest levels to over 200 million as a remarkable step showing genuine dedication to progress.

"The sports field serves as a vital asset for societal growth. It can empower youth and fortify communities broadly," Drogba remarked.

Additionally, Drogba offered guidance to aspiring Tanzanian footballers, highlighting the need to pair schooling with athletic skills. He noted that true achievement demands values, understanding, and self-control.

“Plenty aim to become footballers, yet schooling forms the bedrock of all. It shapes you into a dependable and principled individual. Through schooling, you can realise your goals and maintain success,” he underlined.

Drogba on Factors Behind His Excellence

Drogba, who joined Chelsea for £24 million in 2004, becoming the priciest Ivorian footballer ever, further explained that self-confidence, ongoing education, and a solid life base propelled his football accomplishments.

“I state this plainly, as my father opposed my football pursuit,” said Drogba, whose professional start came at age 21 with Ligue 2 side Le Mans.

“This was during an era when football lacked the professional status it holds today. Thus, I empathised with him and his parental concerns over my prospects.

“Yet, I remained resolute in my football ambitions, prompting me to excel academically too. My studies acted as a backup, ensuring that should injury strike or my playing dreams falter, I could thrive via knowledge.”

Drogba continued: “Circumstances have evolved now. Certainly, guardians ought to back their offspring’s aspirations, while staying involved to guide them correctly and deter misguided choices. This poses a task for all parents, one I encounter with my own kids.

“However, it forms a rewarding shared path. When victory arrives, it belongs to all. My father resisted my football path, yet I demonstrated otherwise. It was not opposition to him, but an internal battle to affirm my capability. Today, he takes the greatest pride.”

Regarding his passion for sports, Drogba noted: “As an economic domain, this draws my affection, particularly football. Numerous individuals desire to play, but only a handful get chosen. So, what becomes of the rest? Many view it as their sports end, but that is false.

“The sports sector offers vast prospects. One might coach, manage sports operations, or even upkeep venues for players. Countless roles exist here. It has evidently generated numerous positions.”

The 2027 tournament marks the inaugural AFCON jointly hosted by three nations, offering a special chance for CAF and African football to engage more than 400 million in East Africa.
