De Zerbi leaves Marseille 'by mutual agreement'

Roberto De Zerbi has departed from his role as coach at Marseille through mutual consent, as announced by the French club on Wednesday morning, just days following a heavy 5-0 loss to their fierce opponents Paris Saint-Germain.

The 46-year-old Italian manager, appointed in the summer of 2024, finds himself connected to potential opportunities back in the Premier League.

Marseille exited the Champions League in the previous month and endured a significant defeat against PSG on Sunday, which has positioned them in fourth place within Ligue 1.

In response to ongoing rumours regarding his position, an official club release stated: Following conversations involving key figures in the management structure, including the owner, president, director of football, and the coach, the decision was reached to appoint a new leader for the first team.

This represented a challenging group choice, reached through thorough deliberation with the clubs best interests at heart, aimed at addressing the remaining competitive demands of the season.

During the prior campaign, De Zerbi led Marseille to a runner-up finish in the league, just behind PSG.

He joined the southern French outfit after a productive two-year period with Premier League side Brighton, guiding them to a sixth-place standing in his initial year.

Earlier in his career, he had managed the Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.
