Bayern Champions Stage Thrilling Comeback in Seven-Goal Clash to Defeat Mainz

Aware that Bayern were focused on chasing a possible treble having already clinched the league crown, Mainz aimed to capitalise, and they struck early.

Kaishu Sano ignited their forward line with a superb touch along the right flank inside the area, then lofted it back centrally for Dominik Kohr to lash a rebounding volley past the keeper.

The away team looked disorganised in the wake of that goal, conceding efforts from Sheraldo Becker and Nadiem Amiri that required sharp stops from Jonas Urbig.

Vincent Kompany could well have questioned his decision to rest several key players, watching as his teams hopes of matching the Bundesliga record points total slipped away with Mainz adding another.

Sano excelled in midfield before finding Amiri, whose effort was tipped away by Urbig, but Paul Nebel followed up to blast the rebound high into the net.

A parallel sequence handed a dominant Mainz a three-goal lead by half-time, as Amiris fierce drive was deflected onto the crossbar by Urbig, the ball looping up and dropping to the line for Becker to force over.

The Bayern manager had little option but to turn to his talented reserves for the restart, and the shift brought swift improvements in their performance.

Mainz appeared helpless against the onslaught, with Konrad Laimers delivery from the right met by a volley from Nicolas Jackson that beat Daniel Batz, then replacement Michael Olise halved the gap by drifting in and whipping a exquisite shot into the top far corner.

Bayerns momentum built relentlessly, level terms arriving via Jamal Musialas close-range finish after the home side mishandled Olises delivery.

From that point, a single outcome seemed inevitable, Bayern claiming victory decisively as Batz spilled Musialas cross for Harry Kane to tuck it home by the post.

Mainz must now hold off until the following matchday to confirm their league survival, though they are set for an 18th straight Bundesliga campaign regardless.

Bayern, meanwhile, turn their attention to the Champions League semi-final versus Paris Saint-Germain, with this result keeping alive their shot at the historic Bundesliga points mark.
