Bayern Munich stage comeback to upset Arsenal in Women's Champions League

Bayern Munich came from two goals down to defeat defending champions Arsenal 3-2 in the Women's Champions League on Wednesday.

An early header by Emily Fox and Mariona Caldentey's effort from outside the area in the 23rd minute seemed to give Arsenal firm command in Munich.

However Bayern showed great resolve during the second half for a dramatic reversal.

Alara sparked the recovery in the 67th minute and substitute Pernille Harder levelled matters for the hosts with a fine finish then Glodis Viggosdottir grabbed the decisive goal by poking in Klara Buehl's low delivery four minutes from time.

"In truth this squad possesses a true champion's spirit" said Bayern manager Jose Barcala to Disney+.

"Even at 2-0 behind we are convinced victory is possible. We unite as one seek answers collectively and push on right up to the final whistle while holding onto our belief" he continued.

Arsenal's second loss from three outings dropped the capital club into the play-off spots chasing quarter-final entry under the refreshed league structure.

Three-time champions Barcelona top the 18-team rankings after thrashing Belgian newcomers OH Leuven 3-0.

Alexia Putellas got the hosts underway from the spot during first-half stoppage time.

Kim Everaerts's own-goal boosted Barca's cushion post-interval while Irene Paredes rounded off a strong showing to secure maximum points and edge the Catalan outfit above Lyon via superior goal difference.

The prime evening clash sees Paris Saint-Germain head to Manchester United for ex-United shot-stopper Mary Earps's initial homecoming since her switch to France.

This encounter also represents Manchester United women's debut European outing at Old Trafford over their standard base the 12000-seat Leigh Sports Village.
