Barca's Yamal can learn Clasico lessons after Real Madrid triumph

The remarks Lamine Yamal made prior to the Clasico generated greater controversy than his lacklustre showing during Barcelona's loss, offering the 18 year old prodigy important takeaways for his development.

In a first for the young player, he drew the full wrath of an entire stadium following statements he uttered before Real Madrid's narrow 2-1 win on Sunday, which drew sharp rebuke in the Spanish capital.

During a live social media session, Yamal playfully accused Real Madrid of pilfering and whining, prompting jeers from the Santiago Bernabeu supporters throughout Los Blancos' success that extended their lead over Barca to five points atop La Liga.

Madrid's squad, spearheaded by skipper Dani Carvajal, approached Yamal to challenge him directly, as tensions escalated post match in a heated conclusion.

Yamal will discover that any provocative utterance from him gets amplified by Madrid's press, much like how Barcelona's media does the same in the rivalry's reverse dynamic.

Barcelona's deputy manager Marcus Sorg, standing in for the banned Hansi Flick, suggested the hostile environment may have influenced Yamal's underwhelming effort.

"That might be the case, perhaps slightly, since he is still adapting to handling the audience, the jeers and boos from fans," Sorg explained.

"That is expected. Usually he is highly driven and performs strongly. Today proved tougher for him."

Yamal has further realised that occasional setbacks occur, something rare in his early professional journey.

He secured the Euro 2024 title with Spain the previous year, then claimed a Spanish treble alongside Barcelona, while placing runner up in the Ballon d'Or race.

The attacker has frequently lobbed barbs via social platforms, and in the prior campaign he quipped that Real Madrid's players could only address him after defeating him.

Yet in a contest as fierce and historic as the Clasico, shifts in control are inevitable, bringing peaks and troughs.

Barcelona dominated all four Clasico encounters last term, a fact Madrid's players recalled as they confronted the youngster.

"Actions speak louder than words," posted Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid's decisive scorer, on Instagram in an obvious jab at Yamal.

Make a scene

Barcelona's playmaker Frenkie de Jong took aim at the 33 year old Carvajal for confronting Yamal openly.

"Should Carvajal wish to discuss matters with Lamine, he ought to do it discreetly," De Jong stated.

"If he believes such behaviour is inappropriate, he could phone him. They are national team colleagues with Spain, they are acquainted. Why create drama right there on the field?"

Conversely, Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni downplayed Yamal's remarks as unremarkable.

"Those are merely comments, without malice. It gives us extra drive, yet if Lamine chooses to speak, that is fine, no issue at all," Tchouameni shared with journalists.

"As a child, I recall the banter between Barca and Real stars pre game, and it added excitement. Ultimately, the contest unfolds on the turf."

Yamal's outing was uncharacteristically subdued, the wide player apparently hampered by a lingering groin issue he has been nursing back to fitness.

He seldom attempted solo duels against defenders, partly due to Madrid's vigilant marking.

"He is returning from injury and requires match sharpness, additional top tier outings," noted Sorg, who highlighted the increased scrutiny Yamal faces from rivals this term.

"Adversaries employ all tactics to neutralise him effectively, adjusting their approach this season," Flick's aide added.

"They frequently use double coverage on him. He is youthful and must grow, and we shall support that process."

It would be regrettable if Yamal shed the edge that renders him compelling on and beyond the pitch, though this subpar display provides ample reflection material for coming weeks and beyond.
