Balogun scores decisive spot-kick as Monaco overturn deficit against Ligue 1 opponents Lyon

Monaco had managed at least two goals in every one of their previous seven away fixtures, and their initial opportunity to maintain that streak arrived around the quarter-hour mark when Maghnes Akliouche latched onto a sharp pass in behind but saw his shot blocked by Dominik Greif.

This prompted a counter from Lyon, with Endrick attempting a long-range strike that compelled Lukas Hradecky to push it away. The keeper stood motionless as Pavel Sulc's headed attempt drifted just past the upright, before the Finnish stopper reacted sharply to block Orel Mangala's bending shot.

The Monaco outfit were finding it hard to replicate the performance that earned them the highest number of Ligue 1 points over the previous nine matches. Their clearest opening arose when Lamine Camara whipped the delivery across the goalmouth, yet even with a couple of Monaco forwards poised for an easy finish, Afonso Moreira intercepted and hooked it away off the line.

This shortfall in invention was made to count in the 42nd minute, as Endrick broke clear on the flank and squared the ball ideally for Sulc to smash it high into the net.

The home team nearly extended their lead right before the interval, with Corentin Tolisso clipping the woodwork and Endrick failing to pounce on the loose ball in time.

The teams resumed after the break with both applying some intensity around the rival boxes, though no real threats materialised until the 57th minute.

Endrick received a pass into space ahead of goal, nudging it beyond Hradecky yet unable to evade Jordan Teze, who hurried back to hook it clear off the line.

Teze featured prominently again shortly after, launching a deep pass that Akliouche controlled neatly before lifting it beyond Greif to level the scores.

With the game approaching its closing stages, Monaco sensed a chance to seize the lead when Akliouche was tripped inside the box by Tolisso.

Folarin Balogun stepped up for the penalty and slotted it calmly into the far corner. Greif then thwarted Les Gones' efforts further by saving from Ansu Fati, prior to a scramble in the Lyon penalty area that left Balogun shooting astray with the keeper off his line.

In the 89th minute, Lyon’s aspirations of a comeback under Paulo Fonseca suffered a setback as Nicolás Tagliafico received a red card for a reckless tackle on Camara, prolonging their barren streak across all tournaments to eight outings. For Sebastien Pocognoli’s team, this marks their third success in the most recent four clashes between the sides.
