Atlanta United sacks Ronny Deila as head coach following dismal season

On Sunday, MLS outfit Atlanta United revealed they had parted ways with head coach Ronny Deila, mere hours after wrapping up a challenging campaign that yielded just five triumphs and 13 stalemates across 34 fixtures.

This 50 year old from Norway previously steered Celtic to Scottish Premiership honours in 2015 and 2016, while also leading New York City FC to victory in the 2021 MLS Cup.

Deila arrived at Atlanta upon exiting Al Wahda in Abu Dhabi during December of the previous year.

The team finished with a 1-1 result versus the faltering Eastern Conference side DC United, which prevented them from dropping to the foot of the league table.

"Our level of performance this term did not live up to expectations, and in consultation with our top executives, we determined it was right for Atlanta United to pursue a new path," remarked Garth Lagerwey, the clubs chief executive officer and president.

"In the end, we must deliver a far superior showing on the field for our supporters, and we remain fully committed to achieving that for this community at the earliest opportunity."

Atlanta United entered the season with optimism after signing midfielder Miguel Almiron from Premier League club Newcastle United, though they claimed victory in only one of their concluding 18 encounters.
