The 25 year old player picked up the injury in the opening half of Derby Countys 2 0 victory against Stoke City in the second division Championship on Monday and had to be stretchered off the field.

"The team will offer Patrick the best possible medical support and rehab during his time away," the club announced in an official release.

"Because of this setback Patrick will sadly be unable to join the FIFA World Cup this summer. We cannot yet give any firm dates for when he might return."

Agyemang netted six times in 14 caps for the US since his first appearance for the national side last year. He took part in the sides two friendly fixtures over the March break.

US manager Mauricio Pochettino needs to reveal his World Cup selections by 30 May. The United States sharing hosting duties with Canada and Mexico will compete in Group D versus Paraguay Australia and Turkey.

The World Cup kicks off on 11 June.
