'Our Mission Concludes After the World Cup': Marcelo Bielsa Announces Exit from Uruguay
"Our mission concludes after the World Cup," Bielsa stated during an event hosted by the Uruguayan Football Association.
While he did not provide further details, local outlets revealed that the Argentinian manager will step down once his existing agreement finishes at the end of the tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19 across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
"Experiencing the World Cup is a rare privilege in any coach's career," he remarked. "I will always cherish Uruguay for giving me the opportunity to be part of such a prestigious event."
Bielsa will lead a team at his third World Cup, having previously managed Argentina’s early exit in 2002 and Chile’s defeat to host nation Brazil in the 2014 round of 16.
After a successful spell with Leeds United, Bielsa assumed leadership of Uruguay in 2023 following Diego Alonso’s exit. He made an impressive start, steering La Celeste through the CONMEBOL qualifiers and securing third place at the 2024 Copa América.
However, tensions with the squad emerged after public criticism from Uruguay’s top scorer Luis Suárez, coupled with internal disputes that cast uncertainty over his managerial approach.
Recently, Uruguay’s performance has been uneven, with ties against England and Algeria during the March international break, along with a heavy 5-1 loss to the U.S. last November.
