Over MLS Next Pro
Geschiedenis, formaat, organisatie, media-aandacht
MLS Next Pro is een professionele mannenvoetbalcompetitie in de VS, die voornamelijk bestaat uit reserveteams van Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs. Het werd opgericht in 2021 en opereert op het derde niveau van het Amerikaanse voetbalsysteem, onder de MLS (1e niveau) en de USL Championship (2e niveau), en naast de USL League One en de National Independent Soccer Association (NISA).
MLS Next Pro is verbonden aan Major League Soccer en staat open voor clubs uit zowel de VS als Canada. Het seizoen loopt van de lente tot de herfst en begint in maart, met meer dan 20 teams verdeeld over de Western en Eastern Conferences. Elk MLS Next Pro-team speelt 28 wedstrijden tijdens het reguliere seizoen. Het team dat de meeste punten verzamelt in beide conferences wordt bekroond met de titel van regulier seizoenskampioen, vergelijkbaar met de MLS Supporters’ Shield. Er is geen promotie of degradatie in deze competitie.
Aan het einde van het reguliere seizoen van MLS Next Pro gaan de beste teams van elke conference door naar de play-offs. Het aantal play-offplaatsen is sinds de oprichting van de competitie toegenomen—van vier teams per conference tijdens het eerste seizoen tot acht per conference in 2024. De play-offs bestaan uit drie rondes (de conference kwartfinales, halve finales en finales) om te bepalen welke twee teams strijden in de MLS Next Pro-finale. De winnaar van deze finale wordt gekroond tot de algehele kampioen.
Columbus Crew 2 schreef geschiedenis in het eerste seizoen van MLS Next Pro door zowel het reguliere seizoen als de play-offs te winnen. Ze stonden op het punt dit in 2023 opnieuw te doen, maar verloren uiteindelijk met 3-1 van Austin FC II in de finale.
