Over AFC Champions League Elite
Geschiedenis, formaat, organisatie, media-aandacht
De AFC Champions League Elite (afgekort als de ACL Elite) is een jaarlijkse continentale clubcompetitie georganiseerd door de Asian Football Confederation, waarin de beste voetbalclubs van Azië strijden. Het is de meest prestigieuze clubcompetitie in het Aziatische voetbal, waaraan de kampioenen van de nationale competities (en, voor sommige landen, een of meer nummer twos) van hun nationale bonden deelnemen.
Deze competitie werd in 1967 geïntroduceerd als het Asian Champion Club Tournament en kreeg in 2002 zijn huidige naam, na de fusie van de Asian Club Championship, de Asian Cup Winners' Cup en de Asian Super Cup. In 2024 werd het opnieuw hernoemd naar de huidige naam.
In totaal nemen 24 clubs deel aan de groepsfase van de competitie, verdeeld over de Oost- en West-regio's (elk 12 teams). De winnaar van de AFC Champions League Elite plaatst zich voor de FIFA Intercontinental Cup en de FIFA Club World Cup, en ook voor de volgende editie van de AFC Champions League Elite groepsfase, indien ze zich niet al via hun nationale competitie hebben gekwalificeerd.
