Portland Timbers dismiss Phil Neville following disappointing season start

Neville, aged 49, completed three years with Portland, but the team currently sits 13th in the 15-club Western Conference, managing only four victories in 14 fixtures this term.

His exit coincided with the league's mid-season pause for the World Cup, which kicks off in just over two weeks across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

"During the off-season, we held frank discussions about the aspects requiring enhancement and development," stated Timbers general manager Ned Grabovoy.

"Regrettably, we haven't witnessed the necessary improvements, and crucially, performances have significantly underperformed against our targets."

Neville previously managed Inter Miami for two seasons before his dismissal in June 2023, when the team was bottom of the table.

Half a year later, he joined the Timbers.

"In my nearly 20 years overseeing the Portland Timbers, few individuals have been as enjoyable to collaborate with as Phil Neville," remarked Timbers owner Merritt Paulson.

"Phil possesses exceptional leadership attributes and maintains unwavering optimism even during challenging periods.

"I am profoundly grateful for his relentless commitment to our club."

Neville led the Timbers to playoff appearances in both of the last two seasons, though they were eliminated in the opening round each time.

"I understand this industry is driven by outcomes, and our results haven't met this football club's standards," Neville acknowledged.
