Calvert-Lewin nets penalty as Tottenham draw with Leeds in blow to relegation battle

With their Premier League survival secured for another year after West Hams loss against Arsenal on Sunday, Leeds arrived in North London brimming with belief.

Daniel Farkes team controlled a tense start to the first half, almost taking the lead when Joe Rodons header from close range seemed headed for the net until Antonin Kinsky made an outstanding save to his left to stop the Welsh defender.

Tottenham steadied themselves following that close call, as Richarlison had a deflected shot easily gathered by Karl Darlow, while Pedro Porros on target attempt was cleverly stopped by Pascal Struijk.

Keen to capitalise on those opportunities, the home side kept pressing as the break neared, with Joao Palhinha blasting over from 12 yards following strong pressing inside the area, and Rodrigo Bentancur nodding a decent chance wide.

The break failed to halt Tottenhams building pressure, and the Lilywhites broke the deadlock early in the second half when Tel picked up a loose ball just outside the area and curled a fine shot into the top corner past Darlow.

Nine of Tottenhams last 12 games had seen more than 2.5 goals, and De Zerbis squad chased an immediate follow up, with Richarlison slicing a volley high from close range after neat play by Randal Kolo Muani.

Even with the home teams control, Leeds got a clear opening to equalise with around 20 minutes left when Tels attempted bicycle kick in his own penalty area struck Ethan Ampadus face.

Leeds main striker Dominic Calvert Lewin stepped up for the penalty, and the English forward coolly converted it beyond Kinsky to level the scores.

That error by Tel swung momentum towards the visitors, as replacement Lukas Nmecha was thwarted by a desperate clearance from Micky van de Ven, though the chance was offside anyway.

Tottenham tried to hit back against Leeds resurgence, bringing on James Maddison for his debut appearance this campaign.

Yet Leeds came close to stealing the win right at the end of added time as Sean Longstaffs fierce effort was brilliantly pushed onto the crossbar by Kinsky.

VAR dismissed late spot kick claims from Maddison, resulting in a level outcome that might turn out to be a vital point for Spurs by the campaigns close.
