Borchers makes immediate difference as HJK secure draw against KuPS following Ruoppis goal

KuPS 1-1 HJK

The reigning champions from the previous two years entered the match leading the league in goals tallied, yet they now hold a one point lead over Inter Turku while staying undefeated, even with an extra fixture compared to many rivals in the league.

KuPS took an early lead barely two minutes in, as HJKs keeper Matej Markovic mishandled a delivery from the flank, which let Jaime Moreno nod it back for Otto Ruoppi to net his third goal this campaign.

HJK from Helsinki managed no efforts on target during the opening period, until manager Joonas Rantanen introduced Mads Borchers for the second half. This substitution proved inspired for the HJK manager, with the Dane scoring the leveller just two minutes after coming on.

The goal was far from elegant, with Toivo Mero sending a low pass through the KuPS box, positioning Borchers perfectly at the far upright to force the ball home.

In the closing stages, Borchers found himself in a prime spot to clinch victory after breaking clear, but despite ample time, he could not direct his effort beyond Johannes Kreidl, who pulled off an excellent stop.

This result leaves HJK with an erratic beginning to their season, placed fifth with seven points, failing to capitalise on their recent 3-0 triumph in the local derby against Gnistan.
