Sunderland reduced to 10 men draw against Wolves, continuing winless sequence

Following a spell where they shipped nine goals in two straight defeats, Sunderland regained a bit of belief by netting first at Molineux.

Defensive lapses on set pieces for Wolves allowed Nordi Mukiele to leap at the far post and direct the ball home from Granit Xhakas curling corner kick.

Yet, the joy for Sunderland quickly shifted to dismay when official Paul Tierney, following a check with the VAR screen, sent off Dan Ballard in the 24th minute for tugging the hair of striker Tolu Arokodare, marking the defenders initial red card since his ejection while at Blackpool back in October 2020.

The shorthanded away side held firm until halftime without further issues, though they were unable to prevent the home team from equalising within the first 10 minutes after the interval, mirroring Sunderlands initial strike almost exactly.

A deep delivery from Hugo Bueno picked out the imposing Santiago Bueno, who nodded the ball down into the net at the back post for his third Premier League strike this term.

Aware that a single point wouldnt greatly aid their push for European spots, Sunderland displayed strong resolve to attack and regain the lead, even with only 10 players.

Xhaka came close with a strike from distance that whistled just beyond Dan Bentleys upright, emerging as one of the final notable opportunities in the match.

In the end, Regis Le Briss team had to accept a point that positions them 12th in the table, trailing the top seven by three points with only three fixtures remaining.

For Wolves, the result halted a trio of losses in a row, although Roefs crucial stop from Adam Armstrongs firm header in the closing stages blocked them from securing a victory for the first time since early March.
